In 1974, a team of South Africans were the first to climb the East Face of the Central Tower of Paine in Chilean Patagonia. This 30 pitch ascent was entered into the Guiness Book of Records as the highest single rock face ascent of that date. It was another 30 years before the route was climbed again. Team members were Paul, Roger Fuggle, Art McGarr, Mervyn Prior, Mike Scott and Richard Smithers. This is their story, told by Merv Prior.
