Über das Buch
“The older I get, the more obvious it becomes to me that the only story I really have in me to tell is my own,” comment Kulov about their retrospective artist’s book Kulov 90-15. This book is part of that story — not merely a visual exploration but also a narrative account of the artist’s political public art and performances, told in the first person and through their own experiences during each of their projects.
Kulov 90-15 is divided into three sections. The first, Political Activist (and Rebel Artist) contains all of Kulov’s political public art projects from the first half of the 1990s, under the umbrella name THE X-GIRLFRIENDS. It showcases most of their political campaigns, visual commentaries, mail-art projects and outdoor billboards covering various social and political topics at the time.
The second section, Gender Warrior (and Radical Faerie) features transitional work, where Kulov turn away from visual public art to writing and performance. Here, they tackle queer-specific issues such as sexism within the gay community.
The last section is dedicated to Kulov’s performance art character Malgorzata Romanska, which they developed in the mid-2000s. The main concept behind this self-made, wealthy art collector and philanthropist is to give financial power to a person who is normally considered an outcast and on the fringes of society. Then through interactive performances track how the public, and more specifically players in the art world, would respond to her. Until 2012, the artist embodied and lived as Malgorzata Romanska for days at a time, and attended numerous fundraising auctions and art fairs throughout the U.S and Europe.
The book contains over 300 images, plus press and archival texts. This personal creative journey informs, intrigues, stirs up thoughts (even if uncomfortable ones), and inspires readers, in their own way, to be active participants in their democracies, both in the United States, as well as worldwide.
