Über das Buch
A portfolio of Roger Hanley's work over a decade, which utilizes long exposure and process-exposure large format analogue photography, to explore questions of physical and psychological terrains, through avenues of the liminal, the marginal, and the surreal.
Hanley dubs his work ‘a theatre of disembodied poetics’. The images in this book are largely about the (always in-camera) creation of other-worldly places; half worlds where time and space distort to allow the meeting of possibility and impossibility.
Conflicts and confluences between appearance and reality always inform his photographs, which are never explained to the viewer. The visual and conceptual threads which run through these photographs can be read as equally dark and lyrical; they evoke both disturbance and wonder.
Though the audience must bring its own interpretation to his work, there is meaning to be had if time and the subconscious are allowed to whittle at it. At its heart it surveys an inner, psychological landscape as much or more than it displays the strange physical terrains at the edge of urban space, which typically serve as locations for his photographs.
