Über das Buch
Dominque de Menil believed that a home and a museum are prettier when they bear the marks of time. If you've visited the Menil Collection, it's likely you noticed the floor. It's made of soft pine; the stain wears away under foot rather quickly, revealing the grain of the wood. The floor, in essence, remembers those who visit - it's a slow, imperceptible process like the passing of time. Mrs. de Menil once remarked, "It's as if the ghosts of everyone who has been in [the museum] were still here. It's as if you could sense them, sense their presence." The Menil floor has thirty years of history in its surface, and soon, the floors will be sanded down and restored to their original appearance. When you visit, and I hope you will, you can smile knowing your feet are putting a little soul into the floor, adding to the poetry of the Menil.
