This portfolio provides an over-view of Alex Tsanders production as a visual artist in the period 2001-2016. The portfolio is arranged in sequence of thematic development, from painted three-dimensional constructions and assemblages through photographic tableux employing live models to more recent developments entailing synthetic photographs created using images shot on location and at his studio.


The artist cites Constructivism, Minimalism and Conceptualism as his artistic hinterland, but challenges the assumption that such "pure" art can only ever be concerned with the plastic, aesthetic qualities of the materials used. The overall preoccupation throughout is with issues arising frm contemporary geo-politics viewed against a classical and historical backdrop. Irony, sarcasm and even eroticism is found in these pieces, alongside, nonetheless, a continuing fascination with material aspects, especially coincidences in colour and object identity. From finely mixed and applied pigment to the pixel-level manipulation of the photographic image, these works are all cut from the same cloth, but spun accross a huge breadth.


Many of the works have been publicly exhibited in the UK and Europe or have been circulated on-line, whilst some are presented here for the first time. The portfolio consists almost exclusively of images to lead the viewer into the work, with very sparing use of textual guidance.
