Über das Buch
Oburoni Ashaki is a personal exploration of western beauty ideals, objectification and the black and mixed race woman.
Unattainable western beauty ideals are a popular topic, but one of the more oppressive of these (which largely excludes women of colour) is less often discussed.
Interestingly, when black female beauty is acknowledged, it is often objectified or fetishised, and thus the artist also wished to discuss the very specific objectification and strange hypocrisy sometimes present in the interracial dating dynamic.
She imagined herself as a paper doll to fold, sculpt and reduce, to adorn, and on which to place the outlines of the physicalities she once so desired.
Standing alongside the spoken words that reinforced these desires - long strands of silken hair, a more narrow and straight silhouette shining with angelic light - she more objectively views and lays to rest her past attempts to conform to these ideals.
