This book is the first formal printing of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant from 1976 which studied the pedestrian environment of four cities, New York, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, GA and Amarillo, TX. It is simultaneously a scrapbook, an environmental critique and a design guide. A line from the Introduction says, "I became increasingly aware as I traveled and perused, that the vitality of pedestrian space is vested in an organic will to be alive; an undeniable energy."



The book reflects a wistfulness as it portrays the "street life" of it's time.
