Dan Baring and Charlie Eyre left London in October 2006 to drive to Cape Town in two Land Rovers over six months.



Their route took them across Europe to Istanbul, down through the Middle East to Egypt, through Sudan and Ethiopia to spend Christmas in Kenya. After a brief interlude on safari with Dan's father in the Serengeti, Lon-Cap headed south again through Tanzania into Malawi, before turning west into Zambia and south again through Botswana and South Africa to their goal of Cape Town. The final leg took Lon-Cap north again to Walvis Bay in Namibia where the Land Rovers were loaded into a container and the team flew home.



Dan met John Laing in London during the Summer of 2006. John was planning a similar trip to Lon-Cap in aid of his old school, Falcon College in Zimbabwe. Driving home to Zimbabwe in his own Land Rover, John joined forces with Lon-Cap as far as Khartoum in the Sudan. Leaving Lon-Cap to travel faster, John crashed and rolled his Land Rover a day later.



Several other friends joined Dan and Charlie on different legs of the journey.



Originally posted as an online blog, this book is Dan's daily journal and photographic record of Lon-Cap's journey.



The journal was written each evening, often using the flickering light of a campfire on a battered old laptop powered by a car battery. It includes many of the errors that were made then, as well as our intentions and plans that were not always kept to.
