Between 1992 and 2004, Marc Steculorum photographed spectators during the spring classic races. His black and white photos are about how these people on the roadside experience the sport of cycling and master the art of waiting. Whether it is the Poggio at SanRemo, near the cobblestones of Paris - Roubaix or in the hills of Flanders - in all these locations, the photographer looked for ‘the culture of cycling'.

Steculorum works with a large format plate camera. The people lining the road are pictured in almost nineteenth century-type photos. They summon up reflections on space and time, about watching and presence, about the permanent and the transitory. The three players in this game are: the landscape that changes slowly over the years, the peloton (unseen in the photos, but clearly present, as a fast approaching arrow) and the supporters in their ritual of standing, sitting, watching, waiting. These photos confront the slow progress of subtle change with the flash of the moment of passage.
