Über das Buch
When I first started this series I wanted to name it “Reflections” before I even started taking the photographs. My great-grandmother Treva Yohe, or more commonly Nana, has been a resident in Reflections, the wing for residents with advancing Alzheimer’s at Brandywine Assisted Living for a few years. I always found it awfully ironic that they would name this wing that because what exactly are these people reflecting on? Alzheimer’s is a disease that devours a persons senility, personality, and their short term and long term memory. When I first started the series I was so involved in finding out and documenting what these people were “reflecting” upon on their last few years. What I found out was they were actually not reflecting they were doing something completely different. Each subject in these photographs, including my Nana, is waiting not reflecting. I was faced with the disturbing and heart breaking fact that these people are no longer living their lives, they are waiting to die. It is extremely hard facing the sad truth that my great grandmother, along with all of these beautiful people are nearing the end of their very long lives.
