Über das Buch
Virtual Lands blurs the boundaries between photography and video games by blending the visual language and aesthetic of both media to complicate the separation of virtual and physical reality and fact and fiction. The works look to play with the limits of realities, the tools we use for representation and wonder of the world we live in.
Virtual Lands consists of photographic composite landscape images created by a combination of a photographic practice based in physical environments by walking along footpaths with computer-based digital image processing. The images are made to visually entice viewers to reflect on their journey while questioning their assumptions and expectations of the images they are viewing. The images depict traversable landscapes, or virtual lands, with routes intended for exploration and navigation. Yet the images are made to complicate the viewer’s ability to identify the place, origin and medium of the image. Simply put, the intentional ambiguity of content and composition is intended to provoke questions while providing no absolute answer.
Where are these images from? What are they of?
And what are they - photographs, screenshots, something else entirely or something in between?
And does it matter, if the image is beautiful or pleasing to look at all the same?
