Über das Buch
TOKYO
is like a candy shop in a minefield.
Chaos and ultimate attention go hand in hand.
There is no centre, there are no hallmarks,
just parts cluttered without a plan.
Even a stone jungle is in a state of becoming;
breaking itself into parts towards a new fabric
that holds no past
because they don’t need it here.
The whole thing looks like a nightmare but feels like a dream.
It is my aim to learn something about a place by observing how a city is organized and used.
Architecture and urban planning (or the lack of it) affects people’s behaviour.
And people create their own living spaces very much on their own.
The type of a society shows itself in the streets.
My job is gazing, wandering and wondering in order to make precise pictures of this urban fabric.
Sometimes, the more I see and experience it, the less I understand.
But sometimes; the more I photograph it, the moreI I love it.

Über den Autor
Herman Wouters
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
I focus on projects recording places and objects in the public urban landscape. The photographs deal with vernacular subject matter and take note of human nature, in likely and unlikely places, revealing an often overlooked sign language of the street. This "Slow Photography", that balances on the edge between an actual documentation and personal vision, is often edited in small editions of self published photobooks and zines.
