Über das Buch
Between 2015 and 2019, I returned again and again to the historic open-air market in Norwich, England - a place of striped awnings, weathered hands, and generations of exchange. This photography book is a black-and-white portrait series of the traders who animate that market each day: butchers, florists, fishmongers, fabric sellers, grocers, and secondhand dealers, each standing before the goods that both define and sustain them.
Photographed in medium format in black and white, these square 2¼ portraits are intimate, direct, and quietly collaborative. The camera lingers not only on faces, but on the choreography between person and product—the marbled sheen of fish on ice, cascades of textile patterns rendered in silver tones, towers of fruit, racks of coats, jars, scales, handwritten signs. In each frame, the trader and their stall become inseparable. The objects are not mere merchandise; they are extensions of identity, history, and livelihood.
Spanning fuve years, the work captures a continuity of presence in a rapidly shifting retail landscape. At a time when independent markets face mounting pressures, these portraits stand as both document and tribute. They honor the dignity of work, the pride of presentation, and the quiet theater of daily commerce.
This book is a study in character and community—an enduring record of the faces behind the stalls, and the human stories that persist beneath the striped canopy of one of England’s oldest markets.
