CONTAINER HOUSING: Post-Earthquake Relief Design

In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaraş and Hatay on February 6, 2023, the architectural firm UrbAr – Office for Urbanization and Architecture was called upon to contribute to a critical post-earthquake relief effort. The mission was to transform ten shipping containers into temporary shelters, providing much-needed refuge for those displaced by the disaster. Completed swiftly, these innovative housing units were handed over to AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Türkiye), offering immediate relief to communities in need.

Living in an earthquake-prone region reminds us of the vital importance of preparedness and innovation in disaster response. Drawing from our experience in 2023, we have compiled our insights and learnings into a comprehensive book titled Container Housing: Post-Earthquake Relief Design. This publication not only documents our process and design approach but also serves as a guide for future disaster relief efforts, emphasizing the effectiveness and adaptability of container housing in times of crisis.
