Über das Buch
For over twenty years, photographer and longtime DC cyclist Joel "Gwadzilla" Gwadz has been documenting one of Washington's most overlooked subcultures: the bicycle messenger. These underpaid and overworked delivery riders were part of the city's landscape for decades, in every season and whatever weather came with it — dealing with aggressive downtown traffic, rain or shine, carrying the city's paperwork before email and the electronic age made much of the industry obsolete. A few messengers remain, but it isn't what it once was.
Volume Five closes out the five-book series, spanning the full twenty-year arc of this project: DC bike messengers from 2004 to 2024. Rather than focusing on one narrower set of riders, this final volume gathers a wide assortment of couriers across that whole stretch of time — including riders known as Coach, Too Tall Parker, Suave, and Richie Riche, among many others. There is no text — just images to tell this story.
This isn't a polished corporate history — it's a street-level, insider's document, shot by someone who was riding alongside these messengers the whole time, not observing from a distance.
Presented in the same large-format landscape coffee-table edition as the rest of the series.
About the photographer: Joel Gwadz has been photographing DC's cycling and bike messenger community for two decades under the name Gwadzilla. He's also the host of The Gwadzilla Podcast, an oral history project preserving the stories of DC's messenger community in their own words.

Über den Autor
I have always been fascinated by photography. Ever since as a small child I got that first film camera, shot a roll, and then was very let down to pull the undeveloped film from the camera to find the brownish plastic strip with no images. Through the years I took photos. Various formate cameras. Eventually taking a college course in B&W Photography where I spent time in a darkroom and learned the magic of developing the film and then each individual photograph. Then with the onset of the digital age I experienced the pleasure of a less expense photo experience. As an avid cyclist I started a text blog where I told stories about my mountain bike races and ranted about car traffic in Washington, DC. Then soon started to add photos to my blog. It became a passion... an obsession of sorts. Here we are 20 years later and I am working to compile a few books on various topics. The blog is dormant, but can the archives can still be visited at www.gwadzilla.blogspot.com.
