Über das Buch
My photographic work serves as a poignant reflection on my 26-year experience of living in East Germany under dictatorship. Delving deep into the emotional aftermath of restrictions and control, I meticulously work with historical materials gleaned from personal and public archives. For this project, I've unearthed secret documents and objects that wielded power, their existence unbeknownst to me prior to 1989.
For instance, I meticulously manipulated facsimiles of my own secret file, revealing the invasive scrutiny of my mail. Additionally, I created photographs of three-dimensional objects based on formerly secret data about controlling citizens. While autobiographical elements undoubtedly shape this body of work, my primary emphasis lies in the formal and structural aspects of the retrieved data.
My goal was to transmute this information into abstract, visually striking formations, offering a stark juxtaposition to the destructive violence of the regime we endured. Through my art, I aim to capture the essence of resilience amidst oppression, transforming darkness into a semblance of beauty and simplicity.
