In the beginning of 1960, George Lois left Doyle Dane Bernbach to found the second creative advertising agency in the world. He went on to become the “rock star” of Madison Avenue, triggering the Advertising Creative Revolution of the 1960s, as well as creating a seismic shift in magazine design with his iconic Esquire magazine covers, thirty-two of which have been installed in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York

“Lewandowski-Lois Paints Machines” is a mesmerizing memoir of his living with his wife, Rosemary Lewandowski-Lois, who appeared “out of the blue” in her first solo show in 1967 to challenge Leger with great critical acclaim. John Canaday, the New York Times art critic, said, “Mrs. Lois’ paintings make it seem that Leger emasculated machinery by changing it.” All the other prominent art reviewers also featured her “humanistic” machines in their magazines.
