Some 1,700 new croft holdings were created and around 1,300 existing ones enlarged in the Hebrides between 1900 and 1939. A large majority of the new holdings had new houses built on them. Many of the existing crofts which were enlarged had existing houses on them improved or enlarged. Few crofts have been created or enlarged since. However, very little has been written about the new croft houses themselves. What were they like? How did they differ from those already there? What was their legacy? Addressing these and other questions lies at the core of this book.
