Co-founded on May 13, 2003 by Mustafa 7 Ali and Valerie Marie-Jacques, mds artists’ salon is an artist-run center for experimental art based in Ithaca, New York. Our activities include presenting performances, artist talks, festivals, residences, exchanges and workshops, as well as publishing in a variety of formats, including video. Support comes from self-generated revenue, co-sponsorships with other organizations and a limited number of private and public sources. The members of mds have resolved to found their own school, with an array of pedagogic safeguards, the most important being that there will be no governing board. The center is run solely by its founders, with genuine input from its members, who in turn are free to create independent patterns of study. At mds, what is encouraged, what is engaged in -- is improvisation and experimentation. Artists are free to undertake activities geared toward finding new ways of doing, rather than studying and repeating the past.

mds artists’ salon was established to provide a stable, ongoing, supportive forum for creating and presenting experimental art. We recognize that experimental art as a practice has multiple histories and encompasses various regional, cultural, political and aesthetic differences. We focus on artists who have chosen subversion and/or transgression as a primary mode to create and communicate provocative new images and new perspectives.
