Before moving to Japan, I was a secondary science teacher in BC, Canada. I have an MA from UBC and a PhD from OISE/UT. My dissertation is entitled Japan's Teacher Acculturation: A comparative ethnographic narrative of teacher induction. I have been researching the process of how one becomes a professional teacher both through the formal and informal mechanisms associated with teacher induction. The research methodology is an original approach to comparative education- a blend of narrative inquiry and reflexive ethnography. I use "comparative ethnographic narrative" as a means to better understand teacher acculturation and to compare stories of learning to teach. My main research interests are contemporary Japan, teacher education and comparative and international education. Recently I published a study of internationalization of higher education in Japan. Now I'm investigating global citizenship education and critical social justice issues within the context of teacher education.
