Über das Buch
Okinawa: Pearl of Japan is a visual journey through the landscapes, culture, and spirit of Okinawa, the southern Japanese archipelago (Ryukyu Islands). Through evocative photography, François Cantin invites the reader to explore both the familiar and hidden sides of this island chain.
The book features images spanning natural wonders, traditional life, underwater environments, and cultural festivities. Among the photographic subjects are:
The Churaumi Aquarium and its marine life
The historic Shurijo Castle
Hidden waterfalls like Hiji
Dramatic sunsets and seascapes
Underwater reef scenes
Local dance (Eisa), tug-of-war (tsunahiki), and traditional festivals
Okinawan flora, traditional houses, and island life (e.g. Tokashiki Island)
Cantin, a photographer who lived many years in Okinawa, brings both an insider’s affection and the eye of a traveler to his images. This photo book functions as both a visual diary and a tribute to the natural and cultural richness of Okinawa.
