Lonnie Timmons III started photographing jazz musicians in 1988 soon after he bought his first jazz album, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. That ground-breaking recording was a beautiful blend of melody and experimentation, that is reflected in Timmons' photographs. He was attracted to jazz music because of its' emotions and started photographing jazz musicians to document their art. The first group that he photographed was the Art Ensemble of Chicago, an avant-garde jazz ensemble.

He has photographed hundreds of jazz musicians from Roy Hargrove early in his career to legends such as Sonny Rollins. What stands out in these "jazz photographs" is the combination of light, composition and timing that Timmons uses to create a singular image.

Timmons has worked for major metropolitan newspapers around the country, and has been published in prestigious jazz magazines such as Swing Journal and Jazziz.
