Über das Buch
In ancient times, the city of Rome was famed for the aqueducts that supplied water to its citizens. The legacy of this is that in modern Rome all large piazze, and many smaller ones, are adorned by a fountain. These come in various shapes and sizes, and are one of the great attractions of the Eternal City. However, many visitors only see a few of the better-known examples, but there exist many others off the main tourist trail. These are equally beautiful and fascinating and many have interesting stories and anecdotes associated with them. In this book you will discover how a fountain owes its existence to the papacy's involvement in tobacco production, how another fountain may have been inspired by the severe floods that once plagued Rome, how a reaction against the founder of the Reformation may have led to a fountain being vandalised, and how interminable delays resulted in 122 years passing before Rome's most famous fountain was completed.
This book covers all of the fountains of Rome that the author has visited and photographed in the course of several visits to Rome, spanning thirty one years (1986-2017). Although not within the city boundaries, the wonderful fountains at the Villa d'Este in Tivoli, just outside Rome, have been given a chapter of their own.
There remain several of the hundreds of fountains in Rome as yet unseen by the author and these serve as just one of many reasons to revisit the city.
