Über das Buch
Classic Literature for Travel Reading Published by Bearleader Chronicle:
Emily Bronte grew up in Thornton, Yorkshire, a remote part of England’s Midlands. She traveled little and when she did venture afield she was prone to illness. Having never married, she died at the young age of 30. And were it not for Wuthering Heights we would not know of Bronte, as this was her only published literary work.
Running about the Yorkshire moors, Bronte’s married heroine, Catherine, and antihero, Heathcliff, carried on in a way that outraged civilized society of the day. On publication of the second edition it was discovered that the author used a pseudonym. Once her true identity was revealed – a parson’s daughter from West Yorkshire – a firestorm of protest erupted, including calls for the book to be burned. Such impropriety authored by a man was one thing, but from a woman? Unacceptable!
But despite impassioned calls for its destruction, publication continued. And its popularity hasn’t waned ever since.
Explore with us Bronte’s story of heated passion and angst set in the austere beauty of Yorkshire’s cold and misty moors.
