Über das Buch
This book celebrates later-life adventuring. It recounts the 550-km solo journey of a 61-year-old woman through Lycian Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya, in April 2014, and includes 49 colour photos.
This walk is not for the faint-hearted, nor for the feeble-bodied; and yet, far from being an intrepid outdoor heroine, our mature-age adventurer is nervous about dogs and heights and wild camping. She also has her own list of later-life health complaints. She doesn't see herself ever winning, or even entering, a fitness event - but she is determined to continue exploring, in whatever way her body allows, forever.
The challenge of long-distance walking is addictive and she is publishing the book in the hope that other later-life explorers might be inspired to consult heir own hearts, choose their preferred style of adventuring, gear up and set off. Many older people are inclined to think that the comfortable ocean cruise is the most sensible option - this book challenges that view.
And, for those who might feel the same compulsion to walk the Lycian Way, Kay has included notes on her preparations, an edited version of her daily blog and post-walk reflections. This book is not a must-read manual; rather, it is an honest account of one woman's approach to a unique life experience - and one which resonates with the joy of being "out there", exploring.
