Frankfurt is hurried and superficial. A city for earning money and building careers. Frankfurt thinks it’s a big city. It makes its big-city appearances daily in the stock-market news, yearly at its book fair, and biennially at its international motor show. Its architecture has adapted itself accordingly. It is theatrical and shoots up into the sky in its effort to impress. Before the Second World War, it tried to escape the oppressive confines of Germany’s largest medieval half-timber town by means of modernist housing projects and the archetypal galley kitchen: the “Frankfurt kitchen.”
You quickly find yourself trying to escape from it once more and out into the wide world. Frankfurt can be oppressive. The whole world knows the story of Heidi—in Frankfurt, she had to go by “Adelheid.” The brief intermezzi featuring the Nazarenes and Max Beckmann couldn’t help them get over it. If anything can, then it’s the airport.
The photographs of this book were created in the course of a few days. I lived in this city for two decades. I followed the paths of my daily life. This book is the result. CUT
